John L. Merriett, Sr.

STERLINGTON, LA - John L. Merriett, Sr. of Sterlington, LA and formerly of Poughkeepsie, NY departed this life at Saint Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana on July 13th, 2012.

John was born March 22, 1930, the fifth of twelve children, to the late madge Merriett and Loretta Davenport-Merriett. He attended Sterlington High School and at the age of 17 enlisted and served for more than 14 years in the U.S. Army. In 1952, he married Bertha Lee Williams and from this union had five children: John Jr., Charonz, Diedre, Stephen, and Verneena all of Poughkeepsie, NY.

He was also blessed with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Brandon, Justin, Christina, Jason, Kim, Jasmine, Miriam, Talya, Chandra, Kyle and Christopher.

John was employed as head mechanic at Mardi-Bob Bowling Lanes for thirty plus years. He was a hardworking member of the Nimrod Lodge #96 Prince Hall Mason.

In 1996, John became a member of Beulah Baptist Church and joined Beulah's Fine Gold Men's Ministry. In July of 1997, John was baptized at Beulah Baptist Church and accepted Christ as his Savior.

In 2003, John returned to his birthplace in Sterlington, Louisiana and became a very active member of the Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church. He faithfully attended Sunday Church School, Bible Study and prayer meetings on Wednesdays and worked diligently for the church's food bank on Saturdays.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Bertha in 1996; his brothers, Bobby Ray Merriett, Alvin Merriett and James Merriett; two sisters, Ozell Jones and Minnie Dell Harris.

John will be remembered and loved by his children: John Jr., Charonz, Diedre, Stephen and Verneena; his siblings: Roy Merriett of Compton, CA; Madge Merriett of New Waverly, TX; Bessie Moses of Monroe, LA; Doris Williams of New Waverly, TX; and Ottie Hamilton of Dallas, TX and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

Mr. Merriett will lie in repose from 10-11am today at Beulah Baptist Church, 92 Catharine Street, Poughkeepsie. Services 11am at the church. Reverend Jessie V. Bottoms officiating. Interment with full military honors at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
