NEW WINDSOR - June E. "Liz" Heffner of New Windsor entered into eternal rest on Monday April 22, 2013. She was 79 years old.
The daughter of the late Roscoe and Hattie Mae (Dowling) Cooper she was born June 5, 1933 in Suffern, NY. She married Stephen Heffner II on June 30, 1951 in Newburgh, NY.
June was a caring and devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In the 1960's Mrs. Heffner volunteered as a Den Mother for the Boys Scouts of America. Additionally, she was heavily involved with the Newburgh City School District in the 1970's and 80's where she was a member of several parent/teacher groups and worked in the lunchroom at Liberty Street and South Junior High Schools. June particularly stood out at Liberty Street School where she bonded with many of the students who remember her to this day.
In the late 1970's, June became a Family Care Provider for New York State, taking elderly clients into her home. She later became the president of the local chapter of the NYS Family Care Provider's Association. Mrs. Heffner retired in 2005.
In High School, Mrs. Heffner became a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution, a lineage- based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in United States' independence. She and her husband, Stephen, were members of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newburgh, NY.
Survivors include her sons John L. Heffner of Murfreesboro, TN and Stephen J. Heffner III of Newburgh, NY; her siblings: Leona Tweedie of Vallejo, CA, John Cooper of Bridgeport, CT, Shirley Bauer of Lexington, KY, and Margaret Cooper Deeds of Newburgh, NY; her grandchildren: John L. Heffner Jr of Murfreeboro, TN and Candace Heffner and her fiancé Frank Claudio of Yonkers, NY; her great-grandaughter Cierra Heffner of Hartford, CT; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, June was predeceased by her husband Stephen J. Heffner II; her brother Roy; and her sisters: Arlene, Barbara, Millie, and Louise.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 pm on June 8, 2013 with a memorial service beginning at 3:30 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave, Newburgh, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions on June's behalf may be sent to New Windsor Country Inn, Attn: Paul Lockwood, 450 Temple Hill Road, New Windsor, NY 12553.
