Marguerite Wiess Obituary

Marguerite Rae (de Smet) Wiess

Fishkill - Marguerite Rae (de Smet) Wiess, 80, resident of Fishkill, NY, previously of Peekskill and Pound Ridge, NY passed away peacefully on March 17, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was born in Philadephia, PA and as a child she and her late parents George and Kathryn moved to Arlington, MA. She graduated from Arlington High School, Cornell University, and Harvard Law School, where she was in one of the first classes that admitted women. She was admitted to the bar in 1956 and early in her career she clerked for Judge Murphy in New York City. From 1975-1977 she served on the Pound Ridge Zoning Board and from 1978-1985 she served as a councilwoman on the Town Board. She retired from the Westchester County Attorney's Office in 2000.

Marguerite is survived by 5 children and 5 grandchildren. Jim and his wife, Debbie, live in Boston, MA. John, his wife, Maryellen, and son, Matt, live in Wood-Ridge, NJ. Rich, his wife, Helen, and children, Christina and Jordan, live in Monroe, CT. Kathy lives in New York City. Bill, his wife, Ursula, and sons, Wilson and Blair live in Mill Valley, CA.

Marguerite was an avid reader and had an extensive collection of books. She enjoyed starting the day with the New York Times and doing the crossword puzzle. Her musical tastes ranged from country music to opera. She also enjoyed cooking and traveling.

A funeral mass was held for her at St. Mary's Church in Fishkill on March 22, 2012. She will be buried with her parents and brother in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Arlington, MA. on April 9, 2012.

In lieu of flowers or mass cards, donations in Marguerite's name to Salesian Missions or Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
