Fishkill - Melba G. Burns, 98, of Fishkill, NY, died Sunday August 18, at Elant at Wappingers. She was born December 27, 1914 in Bakersfield, California but spent most of her life in Oklahoma City, OK before moving to Fishkill in 2001 to be with family.
She was a 1935 graduated of Oklahoma University, at age 20, with a degree in music and an 81 year member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority including being president during her time there. She was an avid OU football fan throughout her life and an accomplished violinist playing with the Oklahoma City Orchestra and upon arriving in NY with the Southern Dutchess Pops Orchestra well into her 90s. A long time member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, Oklahoma City, Melba was recently attending New Hackensack Reformed Church, Wappingers Falls. She spent her career working for the Federal Aviation Administration registering airplanes by paper filing before the common age of computers.
Jack Burns, her husband of 52 years, predeceased her in 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Moody of Fishkill, and son, Rev Ralph Burns of Ashdown, AK, 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren divided mostly between NY and AK.
Friends may call at the New Hackensack Reformed Church on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 10 - 11 a.m. with a Memorial Service to follow at 11am, at New Hackensack Reformed Church, 1580 Rt. 376, Wappingers Falls, NY. Internment will take place in Oklahoma City at a later date.
