Poughkeepsie - Mother Effie Bell Sparrow went home to be with the Lord on August 2, 2012 after a brief illness at Vassar Brothers Medical Center at the age of 79. She was born on December 24, 1932 in Sylvester, GA, to the late Owen and Ella Stephens. She received her education at Green Pond School System in Dawson, GA. At an early age she joined Beulah Grove Baptist Church in Sylvester, GA.
She married the late Minister Eddie Lee Sparrow on March 5, 1955 and 9 children came from that union. They relocated to Poughkeepsie,NY in 1966. Mother Effie B. Sparrow excepted the Lord as her personal Savior in 1979. She joined the Mt. Olive F.B.H. Church under the leadership of Pastor Magdalene Patterson and later became the Mother of the church.
Mother Sparrow was a loving and devoted wife and mother that instilled moral and spiritual values in her family. She also volunteered at The family Partnership/Dutchess Outreach on every Thursday. Mother Sparrow was very faithful at her duties and tithing. She believed in giving God his share, and faithful attending the services. Even in her illness, she stated I'm going to Church. Mother Sparrow was loved by many in the community and was known as Mom or Grand Ma. She loved to cook and care for her family and others. Her favorite food was collard greens, cornbread and her turkey stuffing and sweet potatoe pies.
She leaves to cherish her memories 8 children: Joyce(Jimmy) Fils, Lorraine (Joseph) Stokes, Calvin (Christine) Sparrow, Brenda (Tony) Simons, Carl Sparrow, Joseph Sparrow, Patti Jo Sparrow, Bonita Sparrow and Leatrice (Tony) Swain. A devoted nephew Cleveland (Deborah) Sparrow all of Poughkeepsie, NY; 18 loving grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; 7 sisters: Pastor Magdalene Patterson of Poughkeepsie, NY, Maeola Walker of Ashburn, GA, Alice (Nelson) Williams of Newburgh, NY, Glady Carter of Poughkeepsie, Annie (Clarence) Jackson of Poughkeepsie, NY, Betty (Bill) Wilson of Poughkeepsie, NY, Vicky(Wazalee) Watkins of Poughkeepsie, NY; 2 sisters-in-law, Betty Steven and Parrie Lee Steven both of Ga, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Faye Sparrow, grand-daughter, Lucretia Sparrow; 2 grandsons, Tony Simons Jr and Abdelle Jean St-Ange; 2 brothers,Issac and Jacob Steven, nephew, David Steven, niece, Charlene Steven; brother-in-law Willie Patterson. Mother Sparrow was loved and will be truly missed. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Lobo, Dr Rahman and the staff at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Mother Sparrown will lie in repose 10-11am Thursday August 9 at Beth-EL C.O.G.I.C. 91 Hooker Avenue Poughkeepsie. Services 11am at the church. Elder A.R. Kindle of Mount Sinai F.B.H. Church will officiate. Interment at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. Professional services entrusted to Rhodes Funeral Homes 43 Fairview Avenue Poughkeepsie, NY.
