Poughkeepsie - Muril Hancock, 74, a lifetime resident of Poughkeepsie, died on Friday, February 8, 2013 while walking his beloved dog, Buttons.
Muril was born April 7, 1938 in Poughkeepsie, NY to the late Melvin and Margaret Hancock. Muril was affectionately called "Sonny" by his family and friends. He is survived by beloved brothers, John (Sandy) Hancock of Poughkeepsie, NY; Ronald (Frances) Hancock, Raleigh, NC; beloved sisters, Gail (Robert) Richardson, Poughkeepsie, NY; Margaret "Peggy" Jackson, Raleigh, NC and Sharon Hancock, Manchester, NH; beloved daughter, Victoria Lozier of Wappinger's Falls, 2 beloved grandsons, Matthew (Melissa) Gaynor of Poughkeepsie and Jason (Noeme) Gaynor of Stamford, CT, special cousin Martha Pitcher and children. He was predeceased by Charlotte Bell, the love of his life for 42 years, on December 23, 2009. He also leaves behind many wonderful Aunts and a special Uncle Percy Hancock, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, whom he dearly loved, and dear neighbors, Joe and Rosalind Croshier.He also leaves behind Buttons, his best friend.
Muril was employed by the Poughkeepsie City School District as a boiler technician until his retirement. He was an avid hunter, enjoying many years hunting with local clubs and traveling to unreachable preserves accessible only by boat or helicopter. He had great stories to relate about his hunting experiences. He also taught hunting safety classes in Dutchess County for years. He and Charlotte loved traveling and enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean Islands. He was trained to play guitar and faithfully practiced and played songs for all his relatives and visitors. He said "Buttons" would not go to sleep at night until he played him a song.
Muril's wishes were to be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held at Kingdom Hall, Jehovah Witnesses, 30 Manchester Circle, Poughkeepsie, NY with Pastor James Canada officiating on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 3:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the DCSPCA Route 9G Hyde Park, NY.
