Myrtle May Oakes

PLEASANT VALLEY - Myrtle May Oakes, the former Myrtle May Morse and a long time area resident, died on Thursday May 16,2013 at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie New York where she had resided for several years. She was 88 years old.

Born on September 11, 1924 in Bristol, New Hampshire, Myrtle graduated from Hartford High School in White River Junction, Vermont in June 1942 and then entered Englewood(New Jersey) Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in September 1945. Shortly thereafter, she moved to this area and began her long nursing career.

On June 1, 1951 Myrtle married H. Bart Oakes, well -known dairy farmer at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church in Pleasant Valley, New York. They settled in Salt Point where Myrt helped Bart run the farm for many years. Myrtle also worked as a registered nurse at Vassar Brothers Hospital for many years, retiring in June 1986. Bart died on June 22,1998,and in November 1998 Myrtle moved to Pleasant Valley where she lived until she entered Lutheran Care Center. Her lengthy stay at Lutheran Care is a testimony to the exceptional ,compassionate, loving ,and personal care she received from the entire staff over the years and is deeply appreciated by the Duggan and McDonnell families. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held at Lutheran Care Center on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
