LAGRANGEVILLE - Rita Idelson, of LaGrangeville, NY, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2012, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on November 25, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Max and Mayta Saper.
Rita received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Brooklyn College and earned her Master's Degree in Biology, as well as near completion of her PhD, from Hunter College.
Rita is survived by her husband, Dr. Malcolm Idelson. They were married in New York City on October 5, 1968.
Rita was as an adjunct professor of biology and nutrition at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York for over 40 years, until her recent illness.
Rita shared her special culinary gifts with many lucky people. She had a keen eye for fashion, traveled extensively with her husband and transformed their homes into unique living spaces with her special skill for interior design and landscaping. Rita was well read and her intellectual curiosity spanned a wide range of subjects, evidenced by subscriptions to journals such as: Science, Scientific American, Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, Architectural Digest and Business Week. Her broad knowledge base meant nightly success when watching Jeopardy and in completing the New York Times crossword puzzle. For Rita, baseball was a metaphor for life; she was a devoted Mets fan. She was an aficionado of classical music and poetry.
In addition to her husband, Rita is survived by her sister, Eleanor Saperstein of Southbury, CT; her 4 children, Eric Idelson and his wife Melissa of Pacific Palisades, CA, Jonathan Idelson and his wife Maria Robles of Herndon, VA, Janine Idelson and her husband Dr. Scott Cowan of Longmeadow, MA, and Dr. Douglas Idelson of Branford, CT; her 7 grandchildren, Ben, Julia, Andrew, Emily, Simon, Allie, and Hawky; and her nieces and nephews, Mara and Richard Weissmann of Chappaqua, NY, and Aaron and Jane Saperstein of Bedford, NY.
Rita was youthful in spirit, beautiful, vivacious, deeply in love and exceptionally bright. We are heartbroken and will love her always.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 11 at 1pm at Temple Beth El, 118 S. Grand Ave., Poughkeepsie, with Rabbi Neal Loevinger presiding. Interment will follow in Temple Beth El Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. For Shiva times please contact Temple Beth El.
