Ruth E. Long

Poughkeepsie - Ruth E. Long, 95 years old, a long-time resident of Poughkeepsie, died peacefully on March 5, 2013 at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 13, 1918 in Brookfield, New York and was the daughter of the late Edward Herbert and Helen J. Brunk Holmes.

Ruth was a devoted member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Stormville. She was an avid Mets fan and loved all sports. She also enjoyed playing the harmonica and the violin and was very instrumental. She also liked to paint and draw and doing crafts of all kinds, but she especially loved spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Philip J. Long, Sr., who died in 1990. Ruth is survived by her loving children, Philip J. Long, Jr. of Poughkeepsie, Janet J. Randazzo of Newburgh, Maxine Allen and her husband, Donald, Sr., of Wappingers Falls, Phyllis Miller and her husband, Raymond, of Spring Hill, FL, and Evelyn Detweiler and her husband, Christopher, of Wappingers Falls; 14 cherished grandchildren, Regina Truglio, Leah and Melissa Stukes, Derek, Donald, Jr., Previn and Deanna Allen, Sean, James and Philip Eusty, Felicia Peterson, Samantha and Jason McAleavey and Robert Long; a host of great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Ruth was also predeceased by her son, Dennis E. Long, who died in 1994 and a daughter, Celeste R. McAleavey, who died in 2008; four brothers, Harold, Howard, Carol and Mayor Everett Holmes and three sisters, Winifred Nichols, Mildred Cheseboro and Frances Piersma.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013 from 4 - 7 pm at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, March 9 from 10 - 11 a.m. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 10 S. Greenhaven Road, Stormville, NY, followed by Funeral Services at 11 am. Interment will take place immediately following at the Beekman Cemetery, Poughquag, NY.
