Hyde Park - Elizabeth "Betty" Sears of Hyde Park, formerly of Whaley Lake and Pleasantville, passed away on March 13, 2014, at the age of 85.
Born January 1929 in Ballytober, Northern Ireland to John and Agnes (Ramage) Dunlop, Betty was raised in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. She attended Coleraine Model School and Coleraine Technical College. In 1952, Betty immigrated to the United States with her husband, John F. Sears, of Kilmaine, County Mayo, Ireland. John predeceased her in 1975.
Betty was employed by Reader's Digest Association in Pleasantville for 33 years. She is also the former proprietor of The Whaley Lake Inn, where she was friend and second mother to many Whaley Lake Kids.
Betty is survived by her children, Siobhan Evans and husband, Stephen, Sean Sears and wife, Donyelle, and Patrick Sears; and grandchildren, Brendan, Bridget, and Tristan Evans. Also surviving are her sisters and brothers; George Dunlop, Dorothy Dunlop, and Rachel Parkhill, all of Coleraine, Frank Dunlop and wife, May, of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, and Molly Greetham of Dorset, England; as well as many loving nephews and nieces across Northern Ireland and England.
She was predeceased by her beloved beagle, Maggie, in December 2013.
Betty was very proud of her garden and dedicated much love to cultivating homegrown tomatoes. Fiercely strong and independent, Betty was a true and loyal friend. She will be sorely missed by her close friends and neighbors; Mike, Rose, Mary, Joan, and Lorraine, as well as all others who knew and loved her, especially longtime friend, Viola Tocci.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, March 19th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A funeral service will take place at 6:30 pm during the calling hours, with Rev. Arlene Dawber officiating.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation will follow at the convenience of the family.
