POUGHKEEPSIE - Arnold L. Baratta Sr., of Poughkeepsie, entered into eternal rest on April 20, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital. He was 80 years old.
Arnold was the son of the late Umberto Baratta and Filomena (Ferrara) Baratta. He was born on Jan. 18, 1934 in Poughkeepsie N.Y. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1952. He married Joan Walsh Baratta on April 24, 1955.
He is survived by his loving wife Joan, at home; His children; Arnold Baratta Jr. of Poughkeepsie, Kathleen Irish of Poughkeepsie, David Baratta of Poughkeepsie, Stephen Baratta of Glens Falls and Deborah Baratta of Pleasant Valley. His grandchildren; Pamela Irish Szuts, Michael Baratta, Samantha Baratta, Nichole Currier, Dakoda Currier and Sarah Baratta. His great- grandchildren; Emily Irish, Josef Szuts, Jonathon Cohen, Lilliana Currier and Tyler Garneau. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers; Judge Raymond C. Baratta, William Baratta, and his sister, Agnes Flynn. He was also predeceased by his closest friend, Wade Bolde.
Arnold worked with his brother Bill for many years at Balco Furniture Company in Poughkeepsie. He was a retired insurance agent with Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company and was the Group Health Manager for the Austin "Brud" Hodgkins Insurance Agency. He was Brud Hodgkins first recruit when he started his business.
Arnold was involved in City of Poughkeepsie politics and community service for his entire adult life. He was devoted to the Republican Party for more than 50 years. His many accomplishments include serving as County Legislator and Majority Leader on the Dutchess County Legislature, he was a legislative aide to Assemblyman Emil Betros, and he served as a councilman on the Poughkeepsie Common Council, a member of the Poughkeepsie Housing Authority, trustee of the Greater Poughkeepsie Library District and past president of the Fireman's Exempt Association. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Shamrock Club in Poughkeepsie.
Arnold fought a long courageous battle with cancer. He was an incredibly strong, amazing man. His presence will be forever in our hearts.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 24, 2014 4-8 PM at the Wm. G. Miller & Son funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. There will be a 4th Degree K of C Service during the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 AM in Mt. Carmel Church, Mill St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Inurnment will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 10 AM in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
