Bessie Friedman

Fishkill - Bessie Friedman "Bess", 104, passed peacefully on April 27, 2014 at the McClelland Home for Adults, where she has resided for the past three years. She was born on February 13, 1910 in Marlinton, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Abraham and Ida Rosen Shulman.

On August 23, 1931 she married Irving Friedman, who predeceased her on November 22, 1981.

Bess taught in the Poughkeepsie City School District after she earned her degree from New Paltz Normal School in 1930. She enjoyed her 21 years as a school librarian and an elementary teacher until she retired in 1973. She always said that it never felt like work because she enjoyed teaching her students.

Bessie loved to volunteer. First she volunteered for the American Red Cross in the Motor Corp during WWII. She continued her volunteer spirit at Vassar Hospital for 50 years. Since she has always been an avid reader, she also was an active member of the Literacy Volunteer of America Group. She was a member of Temple Beth El and a lifetime member of Hadassah.

Her two sisters, Sara Singer and Jane Fischer, as well as her nephew, Lewis Singer, predeceased Bessie. Two nieces, two great nieces, a nephew and several cousins, as well as many friends survive her.

We greatly appreciate the great care, love, and respect that their wonderful nurses and staff showed her at the McClelland Home for Adults. Our special gratitude goes to Hudson Valley Hospice.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 10 am at Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Avenue, Poughkeepsie, with Rabbi David Kaplan officiating. Interment to follow in Shomre Israel Cemetery.
