PLEASANT VALLEY - Olive H. Doty, former Pleasant Valley Town Historian died on June 20, 2014 at home.
Olive was born on October 31, 1913, the daughter of Harrison Horan and Ethel Stone Horan in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1931 where she worked as school secretary and later as library clerk until her retirement in 1975.
On July 9, 1938, she married Franklin Sands Doty and move to his family's home in Pleasant Valley. They were married for 38 years until Franklin's death on August 6, 1977.
Olive was always active in the community. A Member of the Presbyterian Church, she was once president of the Presbyterian Women's Association, a trustee and treasurer of the trustees. For many years she decorated for the annual Church Fair and served refreshments after the Christmas Eve Service. She was former treasurer of the Friends of the Pleasant Valley Library, worked for many years at the White Elephant Table at the Library Fair and mended books each week at the library.
Olive was a member and past president of the Pleasant Valley Historical Society, a member and past president of the Dutchess County Historical Society and a member of Association of NYS Public Historians, who awarded her the Franklin D. Olive loved her home of 38 years, her family and her community. She drove until she was almost 99 when her car died! She loved to garden and work outside; she was an avid reader and played solitaire everyday to "keep her marbles rolling." She was well known for her hats, her frog collection and her smile. Thanks to the Pleasant Valley Library, friends, family and the English Classes of her great nephew Jason Morace, she received 273 cards on her 100th Birthday. She was given a birthday celebration by the Pleasant Valley Historical Society and the Town of Pleasant Valley Town Hall.
