Olive H. Doty

PLEASANT VALLEY - Olive H. Doty, former Pleasant Valley Town Historian died on June 20, 2014 at home.

Olive was born on October 31, 1913, the daughter of Harrison Horan and Ethel Stone Horan in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1931 where she worked as school secretary and later as library clerk until her retirement in 1975.

On July 9, 1938, she married Franklin Sands Doty and move to his family's home in Pleasant Valley. They were married for 38 years until Franklin's death on August 6, 1977.

Olive was always active in the community. A Member of the Presbyterian Church, she was once president of the Presbyterian Women's Association, a trustee and treasurer of the trustees. For many years she decorated for the annual Church Fair and served refreshments after the Christmas Eve Service. She was former treasurer of the Friends of the Pleasant Valley Library, worked for many years at the White Elephant Table at the Library Fair and mended books each week at the library.

Olive was a member and past president of the Pleasant Valley Historical Society, a member and past president of the Dutchess County Historical Society and a member of Association of NYS Public Historians, who awarded her the Franklin D. Roosevelt Local Government Professional Achievement Award in 2002. As Pleasant Valley Town Historian (1985-2008), Olive with her Deputy Historian George Greenwood, organized the archives, wrote 3 books on Pleasant Valley and supervised the move and presentation of the Mill Site Museum. She spoke and gave a slide show on old Pleasant Valley to girl scouts, boy scouts, cub scouts and brownies and Traver and West Road School Students. In 1992 she was honored by the Pleasant Valley Grange as Citizen of the Year. In 2006 she was awarded the Helen Wilkinson Award by the Dutchess County Historical Society and in 2008, she was recognized as one of the Senior Citizens of the Year by the Dutchess County Office of the Aging.

Olive loved her home of 38 years, her family and her community. She drove until she was almost 99 when her car died! She loved to garden and work outside; she was an avid reader and played solitaire everyday to "keep her marbles rolling." She was well known for her hats, her frog collection and her smile. Thanks to the Pleasant Valley Library, friends, family and the English Classes of her great nephew Jason Morace, she received 273 cards on her 100th Birthday. She was given a birthday celebration by the Pleasant Valley Historical Society and the Town of Pleasant Valley Town Hall.

Olive is survived by her daughter Cynthia Stirling; her granddaughter Catherine Galvin, her husband Kevin and their children: Agnes, Theodora, Leontine, Celestia, and Christopher; her grandson Sebastian Stirling and his wife Leia and their daughter Ada; her nephews Harrison, Steven, Glenn and David Horan and Frank Gordon Lambdin and her nieces Sue Horan Fishman, Donna Horan Cullum and Robin Horan.
