Red Hook - Richard Coons, of Red Hook, died Sunday, August 17, 2014, at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck. He was 83.
A 1948 graduate of Red Hook Central Schools, Mr. Coons enlisted in the U.S. Marines, where he served for many years. He managed and later owned Herman's shoe stores in Kingston and Lake Katrine. Until his retirement, Mr. Coons worked as the personal assistant to the American historian and social critic Lewis Mumford. Mr. Coons was a longtime member of the Friends of Elmendorph in Red Hook, helping to create the organization with his wife and volunteering to run its fund-raising thrift store. He was Village of Red Hook historian since 1993 and member and past master of the Grange in Rock City (Milan). He and his wife were active in the American Field Service, opening their home to high school students from throughout the world.
His wife, Rosemary E. Coons, died in 1993. Their son, Kevin Richard Coons, died in 1964. He was also predeceased by his parents, John Henry Coons and Emma Whitney Coons; his twin brother Robert Coons and brothers Bertrand Coons and Charles Coons; and sister Henrietta Day. Survivors include a daughter, Leslie Coons Bostian; granddaughter, Emily Rose Levine; brother John (Jackie) Coons; sisters Marion Tocco and Judith Carpino; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will take place in the fall.
