Albanese

POUGHKEEPSIE - Rudolph A. Albanese, former teacher, coach, supervisor, adult education director, principal in the Poughkeepsie City School District for 18 years, and principal in the Spackenkill School District for 16 years has died at the age of 96 on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Castle Point Veterans Hospital.

He was born in Canastota, New York on August 11, 1920 to Jennie Waldo and Vincent Albanese and was educated in the local schools, active in sports, and played tenor sax in his own band! He graduated from Ithaca College, where he was a star athlete and a highly accomplished scholar. Following graduation, joined the army, and was sent to Camp White, Oregon to train as a Combat Engineer with the elite 299th Battlefield Engineers. He was also chosen for special medical training and was sent to Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, where he trained with a special group to create medical situations to care for the wounded after they arrived in France. This group was known as The Soldiers in White.

Additional training followed in Brighton, England, all in preparation for D-Day, which for him came very early in the morning on June 6th 1944, with a landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy. He helped lead one of the first waves of the 299th struggling ashore in heavy seas, loaded down with gear and explosives, destroying the anti-boat and anti-tank obstacles, and gaining what ground they could while trying to hold on in the face of fierce German resistance.

During the battle he was hit by enemy fire, and for the next 24 hours continued to fight and to aid other wounded soldiers before being moved to an Army hospital in England.

After hospitalization in Europe and the U.S., he returned to Ithaca for a Master's Degree and then to Syracuse and Columbia University for further studies. He taught in Maryland and Syracuse, came to Poughkeepsie and remained to call it his own. He was honored in Washington DC as one of the outstanding directors of Adult Education in the country. He belonged to many professional groups, was very involved in the Little Red Schoolhouse, Rehab Inc. (now Abilities First), Kiwanis, Friend's Men's Club, Mt. Gulian Rehabilitation, Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill in the early years, and Maple Grove restoration. He was very involved with organizing and funding the sports program for the new Spackenkill High School and was President of the Ithaca College Alumni Association.

Rudy is survived by Catherine Wolf, whom he married on June 27th, 1953 in St. Mary's church in Poughkeepsie. He is the proud father of four favorite sons: Lawrence, Christopher, Matthew, Gregory; daughters-in-law Gabriella, Sally, Michele, Kimberley; grandchildren Andrew, Sarah, Carolyn, Hayley, Adam, Sarah, Bradley, Camden; great- grandchildren Henry and Weston.

His sisters Rose Rasp and Jane Brennan and his brother Vincent predeceased him. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

One of my favorite Spackenkill administrators! I was blessed to know Mr Albanese as a principle at Martha Lawrence, a parent of my brother's friend and a mentor! I remember getting the "Hazel Barcher Performing Arts award my senior year (1974 - the first class for the HS) and Mr Albanese presented it to me on the stage saying "I knew you were always filled with smarts and talents Mary Ann. Here is your reward." For a basically shy girl I wanted to cry. Many sympathies to the family at the loss of your sweet Husband, Dad & Uncle.

Catherine,

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of "Uncle" Rudy. From my days as a little boy, I will always remember his wonderful wit, humor and ever-present smile. And how much he enjoyed engaging me in conversation with a heavy dose of teasing. I loved it, too. What a wonderful man.

And we all owe Rudy a debt of gratitude for his service to his country, especially at Normandy.

I hope you will take comfort in knowing that Rudy is in the loving embrace of Jesus Our Savior and now keeps company with the angels.

My deepest condolences to Catherine, and all four "favorite" sons, on the loss of your dear husband and father, Rudy. I was privileged to know him through PTA and my teaching at SHS over the years. He was the essence of Educator and Gentleman. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on that distinguished face. (I directed soldier shows in France for US Army Special Services for four years, visited Omaha Beach and never knew of his D-Day service. So sorry I did not know---wish I could have talked to him about it---that is, if he had wanted to, some vets don't.) Rudy will be missed by the legions whose lives he touched in so many ways. May your faith and family sustain you during this difficult time. You are all in my prayers.

Rudy will always be remembered by those of us in the education profession as one of the best. He had been a model for many of us in the field. I am sorry we did not know of his passing in time to visit with the family. Our deepest condolences to dear Catherine and all the family.

Chris (and Family),

We went to High School together, and though we were not close friends, I know how difficult it can be to lose your Dad. I remember him seeming to be a "Larger Than Life" kind of person, with a wonderful smile. I just wanted to say that I am very sorry for the loss you have suffered and hope that you find some comfort in knowing that your Dad is fondly remembered by so many people.

One of my favorite teachers at Krieger school. Then my children's principal at Martha Lawrence. Always such a pleasure to stop and speak with. I even remember meeting him at a Thruway rest stop one day. Pleasant memories and such a positive influence for all who had the pleasure of knowing him. So glad he touched our lives. My prayers are with you

I hope many people, especially those in the Town of Poughkeepsie read the obituary of this great American. Spackenkill owes a lot to Rudy. So does our country.
