POUGHKEEPSIE - Howard A. Halstead, 84, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 29 surrounded by his family.

Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on October 10, 1927, he was the son of Miles F. and Mary E. Halstead. As a child he was diagnosed with polio but had no residual effects. Howard enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17 and was a veteran of World War II. He served aboard the U.S.S. General Brooke and the U.S.S. General Anderson with deployments to France, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Guam. He was awarded the Victory Medal of World War II, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with a bronze star, and the American Area Medal. He received an honorable discharge at the rank of Seaman First Class. During his twenties, Howard worked as a Tinsmith in the Local Sheet Metal Workers Union. He traveled with a crew that did ornamental metalwork and slate roofs on churches, steeples and municipal buildings throughout New York State. He married Elizabeth F. Flannery on April 12, 1958 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie. He worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at both Harlem Valley State Hospital in Wingdale, NY and Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Shortly after retiring in 1984, he started his own construction business with his partner, Jim Catucci.

Howard is survived by his wife, Elizabeth with whom he just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. He left behind his four children: Christine M. Dick and her husband, Tom of Connelly, NY, Carol A. Ahmed and her husband, David of Newark, DE, Charles H. Halstead and his wife Jennie of Barrington, NH, and Colleen F. Reilly and husband, Jim of Hyde Park, NY. He also has four grandchildren: Thomas A. Dick and wife, Christine of Rochester, NH, Danielle M. Wayman and husband, Cliff of Bloomington, NY, Emily E. Reilly of Hyde Park, NY, and Finn W. Halstead of Barrington, NH and one great grand-daughter, Coraline E. Dick of Rochester, NH. Howard is also survived by his brother, Richard and wife, Suzanne of Port Ewen, NY. Also left behind are many nieces, nephews, and friends. Howard was predeceased by his brothers: Miles Halstead, Donald Halstead, and Charles Halstead and his sisters: Doris Kirby and Elener Halstead.

Calling hours will be from 4PM to 8 PM on Thursday, May 3, at the Wm. G. Miller & Son F.H., Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 AM on Friday, May 4 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Mill Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will be at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery with Military Honors.

The family would like to thank everyone involved in Howard's care, especially Elsie, Phyllis, Brenda and Liza, along with everyone at Hospice of Dutchess and Ulster. We also want to thank our family and friends who came to visit and made Pop's last days so memorable and special.
