Dr. Richard

LeRoy Cummings

MILWAUKEE, WI - Dr. Richard LeRoy Cummings, 79, passed away September 25, 2012. He died peacefully at home with his wife by his side.

He was born and raised in Highland, NY, the son of the late Robert H. Cummings and Helen Willsea Cummings and graduated from Highland High School.

Richard was a passionate educator, accomplished athlete and author, proud Korean War veteran, and adventurer. His career included service in the US Army (Panama), US Government (Columbia, Brazil), the United Nations (Malawi), and academia (Milwaukee, London, Lisbon). A champion of education, diversity, inclusion and justice, Richard was a UW-Milwaukee Professor of Cultural Foundations of Education for thirty years. He coached their rugby team for nearly twenty years and played well into his sixties. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. from Stanford University (Palo Alto), M.S. from State University of New York (Albany), Bachelor's Foreign Trade from Thunderbird (Phoenix) and B.S. from State University of New York (New Paltz).

Richard had a great sense of humor, was intelligent, gracious, generous, kind and loving. He spent his life fighting for the underdog and believed passionately in the power of education to transform the lives of individuals. We will miss him desperately but find peace in knowing he lived a full and productive life while leaving a strong professional and personal legacy.

Richard is survived by his wife Betty of 53 years, sons Steven (Gerry), Sean (Julie), and Scott, daughter Jennifer, brother Kenny, sister Ruth Hart (Richard) and grandchildren Lillian and Henry. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His family is so very proud of him for the grand adventure he gave us. It was a good run. Safe travels…….
