Robert A. Tully

Hyde Park - Robert Andersen Tully ("Capt. Pop"), 76, peacefully passed away at home in Hyde Park, NY, surrounded by family on Sunday, November 18, 2012, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Born March 4, 1936 in Beacon to Thomas Charles Tully and Gertrude Caroline Wilhelmina Wassweiler Tully, Robert was predeceased by his sister, Audrey Tully in 2001 and his brother, Thomas Clarke Tully in 2008.

A lifelong Hudson Valley resident, he began his love with football during his years at Beacon High School and proudly played semi-professional football for the Beacon Bears during the 1950's. He was recently inducted into the Dutchess County Sports Hall of Fame. Affectionately known as "Tune" by his friends, he also performed as a bugler in the highly acclaimed Chanler Drum and Bugle Corps during that same era. Robert was also an inaugural coach of the Beacon Pop Warner football program. The family patriarch, Capt. Pop was an avid boater who loved being on the ocean with his family and cherished his time navigating through the Long Island Sound and to Block Island, RI.

After 34 years of service, he retired from IBM, Poughkeepsie in 1993. He was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Hyde Park. In addition, he was a life member of both the East End Yacht Club in Bridgeport, CT, and the New Hamburg Yacht Club.

Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Wilma A. Roy Tully, his son, Robert A. Tully Jr. and wife, Theresa, of Poughkeepsie; daughter, Robin Flannery and husband, Rodney, of Riverhead, NY; son, James Tully and wife, Loretta, of Poughkeepsie; son, David Tully and wife, Linda, of Poughkeepsie; and son, Darren Tully and wife, Aimee, of Johnson City, NY. He is also survived by his wife's children, Randolph Miller and wife, Loraine, of Derby, CT; Jacqueline Coyne and husband, Thomas, of Poughkeepsie; and Scott Miller of East Haven, CT.

Capt. Pop is also survived by twenty grandchildren, Darren Jr. and Trenten Tully and wife, Alyssa; David Jr., Dylan, Devin and Brendan Tully; Deborah Tully; Sarah and Rachel Flannery; Cara, Seana and Robert III Tully; Eric Miller; Jessica, Thomas, Ashley and Casey Coyne; Amy Miller; and Tabatha and Andrew Finley.

In addition, Robert is survived by his aunt, Evelyn Tully of Danbury, CT; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Tuesday, November 20th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

Funeral services will take place at 11 am, Wednesday, November 21st at St. James' Episcopal Church, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. The Rev. Chuck Kramer will officiate.

Burial will follow in the family plot at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
