Pawling - Kenneth James Utter, Jr. 65, a life-time resident of Pawling, NY, passed away early Saturday morning, December 8, 2012 at Putnam Hospital, Carmel, NY.
Born on December 24, 1946 in Poughkeepsie, NY, Jim was the son of the late Kenneth J. Utter, Sr and Eva Lund Utter. A graduate of Pawling High School, he attended SUNY Cobleskill and completed his degree at Dutchess Community College. Jim was a farmer, and one of the co-owners of Utter Brothers Feed Store in Pawling.
Jim was a former Pawling Town Constable, a Life Member and past Vice-President of the Pawling Fire Department, a past member of Pawling Grange #834, The Pawling Coon Club, The Harlem Valley Lodge Free & Accepted Masons, and Christ Church of Quaker Hill.
Although widely known by many, most people did not know that Jim was an accomplished baritone horn musician, and was a featured soloist with The Hudson Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance at Murrow Park in 1964. He loved watching and playing all kinds of sports, and was a dedicated racing fan.
His quick wit and outgoing personality left a lasting impression on all that he met. Jim never hesitated to step in and lend a helping hand to anyone in need. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting with his sons, nephews and friends. Jimmy also took great pride in maintaining the livestock on his beloved farm.
Jim is survived by his three sons; Kenneth and Glenn, both of Danbury, CT; Ross and his wife Cindy of Sandy Hook, CT; his daughter Jillian Terry and her husband Daniel of Poughkeepsie, NY; his two sisters, Susan Johnsen and her husband Norman; and Rebecca Lapp and her husband Michael of Pawling; four grandsons, Benjamin, Seth, Ryan and Jordan; and two nieces and four nephews.
Friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling on Monday, December 10, 2012 from 3pm-5pm & 7pm-9pm.
Public graveside funeral service will be conducted at Maple Avenue Cemetery, Patterson, NY on Tuesday December 11 at 11am. Reception to follow at Pawling Fire Department, 25 South Street, Pawling, NY 12564
