Milan - Richard D. Barrett, 77, a longtime Red Hook and Milan resident, died Thursday, January 3, 2013 after a brief illness.
Mr. Barrett was a graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, and obtained a B.A. in Psychology from Hunter College, and Master's Degree in Child Psychology from St. John's University in New York. He was employed as a School Psychologist at Wallkill, and ultimately Red Hook Central Schools for 25 years. His earlier career included 10 years of pharmaceutical research at Ciba-Geigy, which always included an animal experiment or two for the kids at home. Moving the family from Rockville Centre, NY, to "upstate", he and his family raised Thoroughbred race horses. He founded the Concerned Parents and Teachers of Red Hook, and served on the Board of Education for 9 years. Post retirement, he served as Milan Town Supervisor from 2008 - 2010, was very active in Republican politics, local historic preservation efforts, Japanese gardening, classical music and military history. He remained true to his core beliefs in family, faith, and country.
At the age of 20, he joined the US Marine Corps and was on active duty from 1954 to 1958. He then joined the Marine Corps Reserves and retired after forty years of service with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer-4. He extensively served in Japan, Okinawa, Philippines, Lebanon, Norway and Panama.
Born on November 7, 1935, in Manhattan NY, to Sicilian and Irish parents, he was the son of the late James Kenneth and Mary (Russo) Barrett.
Richard married Christine J. Bila with whom he shared 42 adventurous years of marriage, until her passing on February 3, 2000.
He is survived by his daughter; Beth Barrett Dachs of Red Hook; two sons, Christopher Barrett and his wife Joy of Nashua, NH, and Kenneth Barrett of Gallatin, NY; daughter-in-law Louise Barrett; his grandchildren: Dayna and Kathryn Barrett of Tivoli, NY; Kyle Barrett of Albany, NY, William and Stephen Dachs of Red Hook, and Courtney, Brendan and CJ Barrett of Nashua, NH, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is also survived by his sisters Kathleen Colston and her husband Dr. William of Morristown, NJ; and Rosemarie and Gino Eminente of Westwood, NJ; and his mother-in-law Angela Bila of Rockville Centre, NY. His son Richard K. Barrett sadly passed away on December 21, 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12th, 2013 at St. Sylvia's Church, Tivoli, NY. The Rev. Thomas J Curley will officiate. Interment will be private at St. Sylvia's Cemetery, at a future date, where he will join his wife and son. Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Home in Red Hook on Friday, January 11th, 2013 from 5-8 PM.
