David R. Hess

Hyde Park - David Richard Hess, 66, a longtime area resident, died at home on Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

Born on January 29, 1947 in Rhinebeck, he was the son of the late George and Evelyn Day Hess. He was a graduate of Vero Beach High School and proudly served in the United States Army.

Dave was a Deputy Sheriff with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department for twenty-six and a half years. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1995. He was a Life-Member of the Dutchess County Deputy Sheriff's PBA. A former police dog handler, his partner was a canine named "Gouch".

He loved to fly, and was a licensed pilot and Past President of the Freehold Aviation Assoc., Inc. Dave was also a member of the Airplane Owners & Pilot's Association, and the Cessna Pilot's Association.

On February 20, 2004, he married Jill Cruger on Sugar Beach in Kihei, Hawaii. Mrs. Hess survives at home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, George R. Hess of Ft. Pierce, FL; two sisters, Mary Ellen Frechette and husband, Joseph, of Mulberry, FL, and Jean Owens of Andrews, SC; two brothers-in-law, James Cruger and wife, Gina, of Hyde Park, and George Cruger and wife, Carla, of Staatsburg; sister-in-law, Caren Thomas and husband, Ron, of Hyde Park; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Dave's wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial calling hours will be from 1 to 3 pm, Friday, June 28th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A Celebration of his life will follow at 3 pm at the Funeral Home. Rev. Arlene Dawber will officiate.
