Highland, NY - Matthew M. Murphy, 82, of Highland, died Monday, July 15, 2013, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, surrounded by his loving family. Matthew was born July 28, 1930 in West Park, NY, the youngest son of Irish immigrants, Patrick Matthew and Mary Foley Murphy. He graduated from Highland High School in 1948.
Matt was employed by G.W. Pratt & Son in Highland from 1949 to 1951. He entered service in the U.S. Army on January 1st, 1952 and was overseas in Korea for 15 months. He received the CIB - Combat Infantrymen's Badge as well as several medals. Mr. Murphy rejoined G.W. Pratt after his discharge from the army, and worked there until his retirement in 2000.
He married Betty A. Moore in St. Peter's Church, Poughkeepsie on February 11th, 1956 and they celebrated their 57th Anniversary this year. He was a founding member of the Highland Little League in 1949 and the Pony League in 1970. He greatly enjoyed being a coach in both leagues. He also was a founding member and trustee of the Highland Invitational Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund. He was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Highland and belonged to the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the American Legion, Lloyd Post 193 and Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge 275. Matt was instrumental in organizing "Old Timer's" luncheons held at Casa Mia for friends in Highland and Marlboro. For many years, he arranged St. Patrick's Day celebrations at local establishments for family and friends.
Matt was much loved for his generous spirit and kind heart. Family and friends were most important to him and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mara Riccardi (Philip), Berlin, NY, and Sheila Murphy (D.J. Kitzel), Rochester, NY; three sons, Matthew P. Murphy (Darlene), Highland, Sean Murphy, Esopus, NY and Terence Murphy (Laura), Poughkeepsie, NY; twelve grandchildren, Elizabeth, Philip, Anna and Clara Riccardi, Sierra Murphy, Matthew and Megan Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Lily Murphy Spera (Paul), Charlotte, Emily and Terence Murphy; one great granddaughter, Sofia Spera; one sister, Catherine "Kitty" Carroll, Highland; one brother, Thomas Murphy, New Paltz along with sisters in law Norma Murphy(Tim) and Elaine Murphy(David) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Abina Murphy and five brothers, David, Dennis, John Russell, Timothy, and Arthur, and a daughter-in-law Carol Murphy.
Matt enjoyed his many trips to Ireland with his wife, family and friends. He loved to listen to his collection of Irish music and we all enjoyed his Irish gift of storytelling. He dearly loved his whole family, and took special delight in his grandchildren, his great-granddaughter as well as his nieces and nephews. He was beloved by them and was known for his good-natured ribbing and the twinkle in his eye.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 18th from 4pm-8pm at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 38 Main Street, Highland, NY 12528. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, July 19th 9:30 am at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Highland, NY. Military honors will follow the mass at St. Charles Cemetery, Gardiner, NY. The burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
