1933 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
David W. Brenner

Oswego - David W. Brenner (Dave), of Oswego, died October 19, 2013 at the age of 80. Born on September 22, 1933 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late William A. and Anne Weeks Brenner. His mother predeceased him one day earlier at the age of 104.

Dave married Mary E. Barbato on July 31, 1958, with whom he had four children: Joseph J. Brenner and wife, Alexandra, of Milan, Debra A. McNulty and husband, Terrence, of Oswego, Kimberly E. Brenner, of Williamsburg, VA, and Maria E. Cullinan and husband, Michael, of Millerton; He is also survived by his son, David Dymun and wife, Michelle, of Poughkeepsie; grandchildren, Kim-Marie, Brooke, and Shelby Brenner, David McNulty, Randy and Ryan Frontera, and Katelyn, Victoria, and Elizabeth Cullinan; great-grandson, Anthony Archie; sister, Sarah Brogan, and her husband, Randolph, of Ogunquit, ME; brother-in-law, Eugene Goldsmith of Essex, CT; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Joanne Goldsmith.

Dave is also survived by his second wife, and very good friend, Gertrude Brenner, and his very dear friend, Edward Kearney, both of Hyde Park.

Dave was a graduate of F.D. Roosevelt High School, Hyde Park, where he was an inductee into the Hall of Fame for football. He went on to serve in the U. S. Navy from 1952-54. He had what he called a "gravy job," driving his commanding officer around Jacksonville, Fl. He was honorably discharged, and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

In his early years, Dave worked for the family business, Brenner's Milk Co., Fitchett Bros. Dairy, Mid Hudson Chevy, Ron Prince Chevy, Roofer's Local #99 Union, and then in 1985 started the Brenner Roofing Co., in which he still worked part time with Supervisor Andy Scea up until last summer.

Dave was an avid fisherman, hunter, and trapper. He was known for taking many of the Fairview Kids (Dalbo's, Heller's, Bertolozzi's, and Gamble's) on early morning fishing outings and late night raccoon hunting adventures. Dave was most proud of coaching the 1971 Table Talk Pie Baseball team on to the Town of Poughkeepsie Little League Championship with his late good childhood friend, Charles (Tody) Overdorf. He also enjoyed hanging out at the former Hyde Park OTB with all his buddies. He loved all the August trips to Saratoga Race Track, especially in 1998 when he hit the Pick 6 for $32,600 on a $16 ticket. The story is still brought up every year across the Street from the track at King's Bar. He really appreciated all the good times and friends he had at The Log Cabin, Arlington Grill, Junior's Lounge, Georgie O's, and Spadaro's Sports Pub.

Dave spent all but the last fourteen months as a Dutchess County resident. He moved to be with his daughter, Debbie, where their special bond became even stronger and most enjoyable for both. Dave had so many good friends, too numerous to mention, but was predeceased by his three closest, James (Dutch) Cruger, Earl Beneway, and Angelo (Di-Di) Metrando.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial calling hours will be from 3-7 pm on Friday, October 25th, at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A Funeral Service will be at 10 am, Saturday, October 26th, at the Funeral Home. Interment of Dave's ashes with military honors will follow at 11 am in the family plot at Saint Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie. This will coincide with the interment of his mother's ashes.

In lieu of flowers, Dave's family respectfully requests memorial donations to the Catharine Street Community Center, Attn: Shirley Adams, 69 Catharine St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
