Albert Blodgett Obituary

Albert Blodgett

EAST FISHKILL - Albert John Blodgett, Jr., 74, a resident of Hopewell Junction since 1965, died on Thursday, January 9, 2014 with his wife of 51 years by his side. He will always be remembered as a beloved husband to his wife, father to his daughters, and Taid to his grandchildren.

Born in Portland, ME on January 12, 1939, he was the son of Albert John and Frances Curran Blodgett. Al was a graduate of Yale University in 1960, and received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1965. He had been employed as an Electrical Engineer with IBM for 33 years until his retirement on June 30, 1993.

Following his retirement, Al pursued his lifelong interest in photography. He loved vacationing with his family every summer at Thomas Pond in Maine, where he was able to spend time canoeing, taking pictures, and fishing. Seeing or hearing the loons made the day complete. He also enjoyed meaningful time spent with dear friends.

Al was a member of the Church of St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson in New Hamburg where he served on the Finance Committee. He was also the treasurer for the Howland Chamber Music Circle and was actively involved in coordinating special events at the Center for Lifetime Studies at Marist College.

On September 1, 1962 at St. Denis Church and again in the Vassar Shakespeare Garden, Al married Susan Deisseroth who survives him at home. He is also survived by his daughter Julia Blodgett, her husband Brian Ferki and their children, Zofia and Eliot; his daughter Katherine Gusmano, her husband Michael and their children Joseph and Allie; his American Field Service Swiss son Roman Busch and his family; his brother Donald Blodgett and his wife Nancy-Ann of South Portland, ME; his brother Douglas Blodgett of Scarborough, ME; his brother James Blodgett and his wife Linda of Little Cloud, MN; several nieces and nephews; and the family dachshund, Jazper. The family takes comfort in knowing that Al was an organ donor.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the East Fishkill Town Police and East Fishkill Rescue Squad for their support during this most difficult time.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 2-5 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday at 2pm at the Church of St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson, 37 Point Street, New Hamburg with The Reverend Astrid Storm officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Church of St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson, 37 Point Street, New Hamburg, NY 12590, Friends of the East Fishkill Community Library for their new Children's Room, 348 Route 376, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533 or the Howland Chamber Music Circle, PO Box 224, Chelsea, NY 12512.

My best friend growing up was Albert's little brother Jimmy. As a result I was often in the Blodgett home and admired their close sense of family and the strong emphasis they placed on hard work and education. One of four highly educated and accomplished sons, Albert to me in his life and achievements epitomized the best of these strong Blodgett family values. May his memory be forever cherished. With love and support to my good friend Jimmy and his brothers Douglas and Donald.

For most of my high school years Al and I were "best friends". We lived near each other on William Street in Portland, and walked to Deering together often, lugging a load of books during the coldest days.

I visited with Al and his wonderful family on occasion. It was there I learned to play Canasta - strange factoid to be remembering now. I still remember his mother being very warm, cheerful, and welcoming.

At Deering we were among the geek squad, and enjoyed such things as the Radio Club (with a chance to experiment with all the junk stored in the school attic). In science class we were invited to do advanced reading together in an ante-room rather than sit through the class "lecture". It was there we learned that semiconductor current was a stream of "holes" rather than electrons. We both laughed hysterically about that.

During college, we worked summers together at American Can Company. One year, when jobs were scarce at American Can, we set up a tutoring service to help non-geeks get through their math and science courses. We even got a blurb in the Portland Press Herald, which helped us get some customers. We also got some unforgettable experiences, which we always shared over beers.

I am very saddened to learn of Al's passing -- the more so because we did not maintain our close friendship in the years since college. On a few occasions I thought about attempting to re-connect, but inertia had its way. For which I am very sorry.

Mrs. Blodgett, I had just looked up your phone number to call you the other day. Was excited to talk to Mr. Blodgett about Yale. So very very sorry for your loss. I have nothing but fabulous memories and so admired Mr. Blodgett's intelligence and gentleness. Years ago he sent me a Scientific American article he authored and included such a kind note. Again, so so sorry. Elizabeth De Leo Kolor
