Poughkeepsie - Lawrence Rudolph (Rudy) DeLoatche was born to the union of the late Orlander and Hettie DeLoatche of Woodland, NC on September 8, 1936. he departed this life, in peace, to be with our Heavenly Father on Sunday morning, May 11, 2014.
A graduate of W.S. Creecy High School in Rich Square, NC. He served in the Army in the 82nd Airborne Paratroopers at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC (1954-1956).
He moved to Poughkeepsie, NY in 1956 and was employed by Hudson River Psychiatric Center for 20 years. He then pursued his entrepreneurial dreams in the business world for over 30 years. Rudolph was a well-respected pioneer and trailblazer in the Poughkeepsie business community at a time when there were a precious few African American business (The Imperial Lodge) for over 20 years.
A member of the Masonic Lodge #96 in which he held various positions including Worshipful Master in 1974. Rudolph was still an active member until his health interrupted his ability to serve.
Rudolph dedicated his life to Our Lord and Savior while attending Jerusalem Baptist Church. Later in life he joined Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church where he served in many capacities, most noticeably as Vice President of the Steward Board.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart, soul mate and loving wife of 53 years, Flora Harvey, of Rich Square, NC whom he married in 1960. Together their strong union served as role models & guidance to others, especially during his last days immolating true courage, dedication and commitment to each other.
Rudolph was blessed to have five children: Naketo (Nick) Scott of Atlanta, GA, Pamela DeLoatche Green (Bryan) of Raleigh, NC, Shyrl DeLoatche Wood (Julius) of Raleigh, NC and Alicia DeLoatche of Poughkeepsie, NY. Grandchildren, Jaquanda, Jarrett, Julius, Jordan (Andrise) Jeffrey, Ryan; great grandchild, Jonathan; Godchildren, Tamara Baugham Cherry of Knightdale, NC, Keith Braithwaite of Florida. Nieces and nephews held a special bond with him as a second father. He will also be cherished as a strong anchor to a host of other relatives, friends and love church family. Sister, Mattie Bullock of Hampton, VA; brother, Elfred DeLoatche of Woodland, NC; sisters-in-law, Lillian DeLoatche of Woodland, NC, Lois Jones of Tacoma, WA; Ruth Williams of Gouverneur, NY, brothers-in-law, Thomas Brown of Newport News, VA, Leroy Edmond of Philadelphia, PA. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Vaughan Patrick). and his siblings, Johnnie Green, Willie Green, Lonnie (Mutt), Robert (Cup Grease), Orlander Jr., Annie Mae Grant, Bernice Brown.
Visitation services to honor his magnificent life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014, 6-8 p.m. and funeral services held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church.
