Mrs. Hellerman was born on December 15, 1925 to the late Elias and Bertha (Rosenman) Klein. She spent her early years in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1947. She later earned a Master's Degree in anthropology from Hunter College in New York.

She also delivered food for Meals On Wheels. In 2007, she retired to Chapel Hill.
