Thomas F. Erts

Kingsland, Georgia - Thomas F. Erts, 78, of Kingsland, Georgia (formerly of Salt Point, NY) died on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at St. Mary's Senior Care Center in St. Marys, Georgia.

Born on April 2, 1938 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late Thomas Q. Erts and Margaret Dolan Erts of Hyde Park. Thomas graduated from Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park and received a Bachelor's degree from Marist College.

He proudly served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force for over 24 years.

After retirement, Tom enjoyed gardening and landscaping. He was involved in many various repair projects for relatives and friends. He loved to go fishing, play golf, and watch sports.

On February 10, 1962 at Regina Coeli Church in Hyde Park, he married the former Virginia A. Burke. Mrs. Erts survives at home in Kingsland, Georgia.

In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by his daughter, Margaret M. Guy; son, Thomas Stephen Erts; three sisters: Carol Bartlett, Nancy Erts, OP (Dominican Sister of Hope), and Kathy Barton; brother, Michael Erts; five grandchildren: Thomas, Noelle, Steven, Emanuel, and Brittney; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Tom was predeceased by his parents and sister, Mary Erts Sorrentino.

In keeping with Thomas' wishes, cremation has taken place.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7pm on Thursday, May 11th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park.

A Mass of Resurrection will be at 10am on Friday, May 12th at Our Lady of The Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish, 185 Hudson View Drive, Poughkeepsie, NY (Thomas' former parish). Father Patrick Curley will be officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will follow at Union Cemetery in Hyde Park.

As we celebrate Thomas' new life, in lieu of flowers, Thomas' family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 370 7th Avenue - Suite 1802, New York, NY 10001 (Ph: 904-296-7350, Web: www.woundedwarriorproject.org) and/or to the American Legion Department of New York, Albany County Building Department, 112 State Street, Suite #1300, Albany, NY 12207 (Ph: 800-253-4466, Web: https://nylegion.net.) I am very sorry to learn of Col. Erts's passing. He was my commander at Aviano Air Force base in northern Italy. He was a captain at the time. He was a very nice person
