Julie Hausman Obituary

Julie A. (Walters) Hausman, 70

Julie A. (Walters) Hausman (formerly of Iowa City and Dallas, Texas) died Sunday, April 17, in Phoenix, Arizona, after a long illness.

The daughter of Peter and Paige (Williams) Walters, she was born in Boscobel, Wisconsin, on July 30, 1945. She grew up on the family farm in western Johnson County and attended rural one-room schools before graduating from University High School, Iowa City, in 1963. She went on to earn her B.A. at the University of Iowa and an M.F.A. from Southern Methodist University, with a specialty in ceramics.

Julie married David Hausman in 1968 and they had two children, Kirsten and Christopher. They resided in Dallas, Texas. After this marriage ended, Julie returned to Iowa City with her children.

For many years, she was the curator of the slide collection at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. She was also an active member of the congregation of St. Patrick's Church.

In later life, she returned to Dallas to be near her grandchildren and pursue her artistic interests. She had recently moved to Phoenix, where she was being cared for by her daughter.

Julie is survived by her daughter, Kirsten Hausman (and husband, Matt Palmer, and his children, Ries, Cassandra, Julia, and Mila), of Phoenix; her son, Christopher Hausman (Celina), and grandchildren Zed and Zoe of Denver, CO; her brother, Jim (Christine) Walters, of Iowa City; a nephew, Matthew Walters (and partner Catherine Lueth), of North Liberty; two paternal uncles, one paternal aunt, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Throughout her illnesses, Julie received great comfort from her dogs, Sascha, Minipenny, and Goldie.

A memorial gathering will be held in Iowa City sometime this summer. The family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower St.,Phoenix, AZ. 85014, 602-530-6992

I first met Julie when I did a work study at the art slide library. She was patient and kind and very smart. I felt lucky to have known her through the years--and so lucky to have spoken with her on the phone recently. Peace and light are hers now.

I worked with Julie for several years on a number of computer-art history projects and she was remarkable in her integrity and quiet strength. A finer human being you could not find. I am lucky to have had her as a friend. She so loved her children.

Julie was a lovely and very talented woman. I will always remember her creativity, her faith and her courage. It was a joy to have her as a neighbor in Iowa City.
