I first met Dick in the mid seventies first as a patient with no money or health insurance and from then on as a friend. He was a true people's doctor seeing anyone regardless of their ability to pay, always steering people to a better wellness either through sternness or with ample humor. He helped me through many tough times. As people know he did great things for humanity, never putting himself above anyone. I will always remember his wisdom and kindness. Rest in peace my brother. You are forever loved.

This is the first half of a poem I wrote that includes Dick in the early 1970s:
MY SELMER MARK VI ALTO SAXOPHONE
I don't recall if I'd played All The Things You Are or just sang the beginning and hummed and scatted the rest.
I can't say that Rick, Doug, Audrey, Dr. Dick, Carlos, Dan, Chuck, Jim and I
and whoever else might have shown-up had played songs when we jammed at the bungalow that Rick bought for $5,000 in Iowa City on Bowery Street between Gilbert and Linn or in the downtown Mini Park before the new Godfather's Pizza boosted the economy but took from us the park's ambience by removing the bushes we'd played among or at Carlos's pad, so small for our congas and bongos, the saxophone, guitars both electrified and acoustic, the Goodwill toy piano and kazoo, and we singing, chanting, shouting stomping, fueled by, espressos, friendship, youth, and freedom.
No, not whole songs did we play, even when Carlos and Jimreal musicians kicked us off with one. But it was music, once we got-up a head of steam, or, call it good enough for jazz, but whatever, They Can't Take That Away From Me.

Dick was my husband for 24 years and he was the most intelligent person I ever knew, he gave me an education. He was a kind, forgiving person and always loyal. I will love him until my last breath.

I have fond memories of Dick, he was a kind and non-judgemental person. He was concerned about creating access to health care where access was challenging and lived that value. Dick was a good guy, it was always good to see him, I will miss him.

Dick was a kind and an advocate for those in need.
He was strong in his beliefs and understanding of those facing difficulties or having problems. Dick was known to me for over 70 years. Our lives crossed paths in Iowa and California. Many hours were spent playing cribbage, playing golf and visiting.
He will be missed for his concern for his fellow man,
humor, and just being Dick Winter

I was a patient and friend of Dick, I talked to him just a day or two before he died. I wish he'd said something.

He was a long time friend, starting as a fraternity bother at Iowa state college, and being an usher in our wedding. Wint and I stayed in contact over the years, always had a good tale to spin and a good suggestion to make your day better. Phi Alpha brother, safe journey to the chapter eternal. Robert F. A kind soul who helped people without passing judgement. He was one of kind. I am sad to hear of his death in this manner. We never know what's truly inside someone.

Dick Winter was a good friend and did much for others, including establishing a free clinic in Iowa City in the 1970s. Like another good friend and human being I knew, Victor Biondo, he helped other so much but also took his own life. Goodbye, Friend.
