Chess, Deborah Ann
Deborah Ann Chess (formerly Deborah Gottheim) died on January 15, 2013, one week shy of her 75th birthday, at her home in Albany, NY. She died as she lived; with great strength and grace. Deborah was born in 1938 in Newport News, VA, the only child of Elizabeth Rebecca Williams and David Walter Chess, both of whom predeceased her. Debbie's survivors include her daughter, Sarah Gottheim Montgomery, (Scott); her son, Joshua Chess Gottheim, (Maricela); and Debbie's grandchildren, Lucas, Matthew, Joshua, Gabriel and twins Daniel and Luisa. Duncan Byers was her heartfelt companion of 30 years. Debbie's education included a BA from Oberlin College, and a masters in fine arts in sculpture and ceramics from Alfred University. Debbie will be remembered for her art; sculpture, painting, pottery, and beading. She was able to turn the ordinary into the marvelous. She will be remembered for her kindness and her generosity. She volunteered at the Albany Library Book Sale for nearly ten years; donated her art to fund-raising events; was a peace activist, a bird watcher, a gardener who turned her somewhat unpromising gardening space into a paradise. She was a great mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed by many. Services will be private.
