Maney, Chief George
Chief George Maney, 72, of Johnson City, NY went to be with the Lord December 15, 2013. George was born on November 14, 1941 to John Maney and Mary (Hiovich) Maney. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie (Palmer) Maney; his children Karin Maney, Michael (Sarah) Maney, Gregory (Amy) Maney, Kathleen (Luke) St. John; and his grandchildren Noah Maney, Michael and Leah Maney, and Henry St. John. He is also survived by a large extended family. George was a lifetime member of St. James Church in Johnson City. George's career as a firefighter
spanned over 37 years with the Johnson City Fire Department, 15 of those years serving as Chief of the department. He retired in July, 2001. He also served as President of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Chairman of the NYS Department of State - Division of Building Standards and Codes, and served on the New York State Codes Council Fire Sub Committee. George was a member of New York State Building Officials, Career Fire Chiefs NYS, International Codes Council, International Association of Fire Chiefs, former member of Choconut Center Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Johnson City Knights of Columbus #2953, and a BC Open/Dicks Open Golf Tournament Volunteer. In addition to his duties as Fire Chief in Johnson City, George spent many years as Building Inspector for the Village. In that capacity, he helped many owners navigate the requirements for opening their new businesses. George stood head and shoulders above other men, and was known for his absolute honesty and integrity. You will be missed, Chief. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. James Church in Johnson City on Saturday, December 21st at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00am at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Wong and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit nurses and staff at Wilson Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chief Maney's name to the pediatric burn patients at Shriners Hospital for Children - Boston located at 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
