Owego, New York: Gerald G. Arbes, 85, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. Gerry was predeceased by his brother, Spero Arbes. He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Beverley J. (Struble) Arbes; four children and their spouses, Deborah J. Arbes and her husband, David Thaddeus, Gerald G. Arbes, Jr. and his wife, Diane; David K. Arbes and his wife, Emily, Laurie A. Worthing and her husband, Ray; nine grandchildren, Anissa and Jacob Arbes Thaddeus, Natalie (Jeffrey) Wickman, Nicole (Trevor) Franklin, Andrew and Alexander Arbes, Hilary, Aubrey and Raven Worthing; brother-in-law, Robert Struble; sister-in-law, Estella Struble; several nephews and cousins; very special family friend, Ralph "Arbes" Moses. Mr. Arbes was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army. He joined IBM in 1951 and held various assignments concluding his career as a department manager in 1981. He was co-owner and vice president of United Machine and Tool, Co, Endicott, NY. Gerry was very community minded. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Owego, having served on the board of trustees, usher and was "Clerk of the Works" for the construction of the new Barton Building. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club. In 1999, he received "Man and Youth" Award for his dedication to the youth of the community. Gerry joined the Owego Kiwanis Club in 1982. He served as treasurer for many years and took great pride in mowing and maintaining the lawn and flag pole area at exit 65 off Route 17 into Owego. In 1999, Gerry received the George F. Hixson fellowship Award in recognition of significant contributions to Kiwanis. Mr. Arbes was a member of the Board of Directors for the Mildred Truman Faulkner Foundation and a longtime member of the Owego Elks Lodge #1039. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Owego with the Rev. Alan Jagger, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday Evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club - Raise the Roof Fund, P.O.
