Harold Lee Herz

Herz, Harold Lee

Harold Lee Herz, who enriched the world with his presence, has joined his rightful place among the righteous, for whose men the world is preserved. He was the son of the late Henry Herz and Laura Spiegel Herz, and brother to Lillian Herz Goldberg. Harold was born in Mount Vernon, NY, graduated from Mount Vernon High School, Columbia University School of Engineering (B.S.), and New York University (M.S.). Harold married Diane Lipp Herz in 1953. They have 3 boys: Henry (wife - Julie; and their sons Joshua and Harrison), Bill (wife - Christine), and Seth (wife - Laura; and their children Max and Kate). The family lived in Mount Vernon and Larchmont before leaving Westchester County for Binghamton. Harold served for many years on the Executive Board of Trustees at Temple Israel. Although a zealous worker on many committees and for various causes, he preferred to focus on the job at hand quietly, and was uncomfortable with publicity. After retiring from General Electric, Harold had time to pursue his hobby of working with silver and ebony to create Judaica. Several of his pieces were sold at various Jewish museums across the United States. Included among his many awards and accomplishments are: a community service award from General Electric; creating and maintaining the sound system of Temple Israel to distribute devices for hard of hearing members on the high holidays; the Yasher Koach reward from the Jewish Federation of Broome County for making the community stronger. He also received recognition from Temple Israel for giving generous contributions of his time. No matter how busy, he enjoyed the time spent attending his son's sporting events, listening to philharmonic concerts, playing tennis with Diane, and sailing at Whitney Point with family and friends. His kind and gentle nature is missed by all of those he touched. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at Temple Israel, 4737 Deerfield Place, Vestal NY. Rabbi Tziona Szajman will officiate. Interment will follow at Temple Israel-Riverside Cemetery Conklin, NY. The family will observe Shiva at the family home Saturday, November 10, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Arrangements are with the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, 71 Main Street, Binghamton NY.
