John Paul Donnelly, 82, of Johnson City, formerly of Vestal, died on December 14, 2013 after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Joan (Reardon) Donnelly, after 48 years of marriage, in 2000. He was also predeceased by his children Mark Gerard Donnelly (d. 2003) and Margaret Ann (Donnelly) Cutler (d. 1997), and his sister May Elizabeth (Donnelly) Weitze (d. 2009). He was born on January 2, 1931 in Endicott, NY to Paul and Dorcas (Gardiner) Donnelly, the third of six children, and raised in Lounsberry, NY. He graduated from Owego Free Academy in 1947 and Cornell University in 1951. After college and his marriage in 1952, he entered the United States Marine Corps as a Korean War-era veteran, serving in Waukegan, IL, San Diego, CA, and Norfolk, VA. Returning home, he worked for Cadre Industries before moving to IBM-Owego, where he worked for 20 years. After his retirement in 1987, he and Joan served in the Catholic Worker movement, first at Nazareth Farm in Salem, WV and then as founding staff at Saint Francis Farm in Lacona, NY. He had been an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows, Vestal for many years, serving as an usher, a Eucharistic minister, a founding member of the RCIA program, and as president of the parish council. He was also a Knight of Columbus and a former Grand Knight of the Monsignor Houlihan Council, #4746. In later years, he became an active parishioner of St. James, working with their Helping Hands Ministry and attending daily Mass for many years. In addition, he was an avid gardener, handyman, and Scrabble player. John is survived by four siblings: Thomas (Jean) Donnelly of Western Springs, IL; James (Mary) Donnelly of Lounsberry, NY; Jeanette (Leroy) Anderson, Lewisburg, OH; and Michael (Rose) Donnelly, Rock Hill, SC. He also leaves five children: Paul (Patti), Steven (Marlene), Phillip (Charles Penn), Mary (Andrew Haggerty), and Matthew (Ruth); two children-in-law, David Allen (Towanda, PA) and Brenda Lyons Donnelly (San Antonio, TX); and 16 grandchildren: Jean Tome, Meredith Snider, Jonathan Donnelly, Thomas, Michael, and Kevin Donnelly, Meghan Kauchis, William Cutler III, and Phillip Allen, Molly Westlake, Seamus, Róisín, and Sean Haggerty, Brittany Cecci, Devin and Anna Donnelly; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. James Church Tuesday at 1PM. Burial will be in St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, Little Meadows, PA, at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home Inc. 150 Main St. Johnson City Monday from 2-4PM and 6-9PM.
