Binghamton: Leah Schwartz, 96, of Binghamton, NY passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Bridgewater Nursing Center surrounded by her loving family. Leah was predeceased by her husband, Harold Schwartz; and her son, Joseph Schwartz. She is survived by her daughter, Lynne (Howard) Green; daughter-in-law, Sheila Schwartz; grandchildren; Jay (Sandi), Pam (Lee), Brett (Wendy), Rae Ellen (Jason), Mark (Rachel); great grandchildren, Alison, Erica, Zachary, Hannah, Dylan, Derek, Grace, Shira, Isaac, Ari, Eli and Sophie. Leah lived in Nashville, Tenn. for many years. She graduated from Vanderbilt University
as a Social Worker and Teacher and was President of the Sisterhood at West End Synagogue, Hadassah and many civic organizations. Before retiring, her daughter, Lynne, brought them to Binghamton to live. Here in Broome County, Leah went back to work as a Social Worker in the Grow Program which helps Seniors find work helping other Seniors. She was active in the community and was President of the Senior Friendship Club of the Jewish Community Center; she also volunteered at Binghamton General Hospital for many years and helped at Temple Israel with many projects. Graveside Services were held Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Exeter, Pa. Shiva will be observed Tuesday through Thursday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lynne's home on the South Side of Binghamton.
