Mahlon Card Obituary

Card, Mahlon H.

Mahlon H. Card, 98, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2014, following a life well lived. He was born on April 14, 1916, in Endicott, NY, the son of Hermon R. and Candace M. Card. He was married to Louise M. Walls on June 8, 1939, and they enjoyed 45 happy years until her passing in 1984. He is survived by his sister, Marion (Vincent) Benjamin of Bainbridge; his son, Hermon R. Card and daughter-in-law Dolores of Syracuse; granddaughter, Jean-Louise T. Card (Stuart Moll) of McLean, VA; step grandsons, Don (Vanessa) McPeak of Hendersonville, TN, Dave (Dawn) McPeak of Syracuse; step granddaughter, Stefanie (Glen) Rothenberg of Camillus; eight step great-grandchildren; step great-great-grandson, Jackson Cody Chappell; many nieces and nephews, and his longtime companion, Hazel Dentico of Endicott. He was predeceased by his sisters, Marlea (Stuart) Watkins and Madelyn (Roger) Mead; and niece Renee Mead. He attended Endicott public schools and graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1934. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1939 and Cornell University Law School in 1942. During his long legal career he served as Broome County Assistant District Attorney, Village Attorney of Endicott and Town of Vestal Attorney. He retired from the active practice of law in 1988 as a member of the firm of Becker, Card, Levy and Sluzar. He remained a licensed attorney for the remainder of his life, and provided pro bono legal services and advice for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Endicott for over seventy-five years, holding a number of offices. He was an active member of many civic, social and fraternal organizations and played an active role in Broome County politics, including service as the county's Republican Party Chairman. He loved baseball and was lifelong Yankee fan, married to a lifelong Dodger fan. He was an avid golfer, belonging to the Binghamton Country Club for over 50 years and carried a fly fishing rod in his car so that he might be ready if he chanced upon a promising trout stream. Likewise, he always had a camera on hand and left a wealth of visual memories of his family's history. He was also an accomplished woodworker and story teller. He particularly enjoyed the many summers spent with family and friends at Highland Lake, PA, especially time with his nieces and nephews, Wayne (Susan) Watkins, Candace (Joel) Chace, Barbara (Everett) Neville, Marlea (Richard) MacPherson, David (Nicole) Benjamin and their many children. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the family plot at Riverhurst Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Greater Endicott Boys and Girls Club.

Our condolences to the Family. It has been a few years since we would occasionally see each other at Wegmans and chat.I looked forward to receiving his Christmas card each year....missed the last one. I was his housekeeper for a few years and he always greeted me with "Top of the Morning!" Until we meet again, rest in peace Mahlon.

As one of his son's closest friends I spent many hours in the warm regard of Mahlon H. Card and his wife. He was kind, reliable, and exemplary of the best sort of man one would want to grow up to be. He was there when I needed aid outside my own family. His son honors him daily with his fine character formed by Mahlon's guidance. Endwell and Endicott will greatly miss him.
