Kelly and family,

I am shocked and so very saddened by your father's passing. Your dad was such a wonderful person, and he was a "faux father" for me when I needed one. And after reading his obituary, it's clear that he helped many young people in exactly the same way.

Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks...

To Al's family and friends. Al was my professor in the 70's,and, a professional mentor in the 2000's.

He shared his intelligence and wisdom to all he encountered, and he will be missed and remembered by his students.

When in his class he made the Alaskan pipeline experince come to life.

This will take you way back, I remember meeting with him in his office in the late 70's asking him to be my independent study professor, and I was so in awe of him because he was so smart. He was smoking a pipe and he leaned back and listened to my ideas. Then he taught me how to think like a researcher. When I returned to BU I was so happy to work with him on the Pegasus project. I spent many hours in his office as he brought me up to speed. I was very happy to hear that he left his research to our BU library and was so excited when the materials began to arrive. Please know my sympathy is with you all, and he will be missed by far more people than you might realize.

Deke, Kelly, Kerry and Kristen - I am so sorry to hear about your father. I was very lucky to have known him, studying with him at Potsdam and Binghamton. Al was a friend and a major influence on my career. I remember all of us when we were much younger, while I was a student at Potsdam in the early 70s. Many pleasant visits to the house (and that very large dog you had -Sam?). He was so proud of you kids. He is greatly missed, yet truly lives on in the many, many lives he touched.

I did not know Prof. Dekin very well and only met him a handful of times at the university, but he was always such a genuinely thoughtful and caring person. As he was cleaning out his lab, he gave some of the PAF staff and grad students a few of this older trowels. I'll think about him whenever I use it in the field. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends

I took my grandson, almost three, to visit Al about a month ago. He was having fun playing with toys in a cardboard box in the living room, trucks that had been Al's in childhood, remnants of his children's toys and legos, some very old, some a recent gift from his daughter. The toddler was content with the trucks until a photo on the side table caught his attention . . . eleven children at the beach when the Dekin clan had a family vacation two years ago. My grandson is just starting to grasp the concept of the interrelationships of generations in family and we counted the children as he looked from Al to the photo and back again as I explained that these were Al's grandchildren, he had many . . . which gave Al much amusement. I could say many things about Al Dekin as a teacher and colleague, but what has comforted me in the friendship I've had with him these last few years is the obvious love he held for his children and the tremendous pride he had in being the patriarch of such a glorious family. He had talked with me once several years ago about establishing family traditions to hold a family together; in this category he held this clan's summers by the water. That day we talked about the arrangements he'd been in the process of completing with the BU library during his fall sabbatical to archive years and years of research, a life's work. When I asked him what he was going to do this spring when all was done, he said; "I'm going to travel and spend time with my grandchildren." I am sad that he will not have that opportunity for extended time with these eleven children of whom he was so proud, but I do hope they will remember his hopes and dreams for them and stay close to each other as he wanted his children and grandchildren to be. Although all of you are spread far and wide around the globe, I know your father considered you, his family, his greatest achievement.

To the Dekin family, Condolences on your loss. I have fond memories of your father as an anthropologist with a deep love of Alaska. I explored his lab up on the second floor where his graduate students were engaged in sorting through materials and he dropped by to share his great big laugh. Warmly, Jennifer Astone (Binghamton Anthropology Department Ph.D. 1996)

To the family: One day in class waiting for the technological component of his lecture to come on line there popped up a wonderful picture of his grown family from a recent holiday together. He took a minute to introduce you all and say how much he enjoyed his time with you...He loved you very much.

Al,
Pam and I were sad that we did not have the dinner together that we planned to celebrate our birthdays and your retirement. Pam set the table and we had cake and ice cream and sang happy birthday. What a wonderful friend you were and I will miss you deeply. My condolences to the family.
