Hiemstra, August

August Hiemstra, 66, of Greene, passed away with his loving family by his side after a 14 year battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Rose Hiemstra, and brother-in-law, John Evanick. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Leslie Hiemstra. "Augy", as he was known by his friends and family, loved nothing more than his wife, children, and grandchildren: Teenya Shrauger (Skylar and Gabe), Rhea and Jerry Deyo (Grace, Ella and Adelaide), and Trisha and Colby Jesset. He is survived by his brother, Sidney Hiemstra and sister-in-law, Belinda, and his sister Tracey Evanick. Sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law: Doris and Edward Leonard Jr., Betty and Harvey Hunter, Ruth (Cookie) and Joseph Panek, Bonnie Hill, and Lester and Rena Janke. He is also survived by several beloved aunts and uncles. His nieces and nephews were so special to Augy; he shared many of the same interests and enjoyed spending time with them and their families whenever possible. Augy served in the United States Air Force, and was also a volunteer fireman for the Triangle Fire Company for many years. Having lived in Triangle for 35 years and working for Xerox for 38 years, Augy has made and cherished many friendships in the community and during his career. He was happiest when working on equipment and was always there to help others. He enjoyed his "hobbies" in retirement which included being a camp cook, working on all of his various toys and expanding his vast knowledge of history. His sense of humor was second only to one and his greatest joy was found when watching the sun set over the rolling fields on his farm, and in the love and laughter of his wife, children and grandchildren. The family wants their friends in the community to know how much their love, help and support have been appreciated over the course of Augy's illness. Funeral services will be held 10AM Tuesday at Root Funeral Home. Burial will follow in South Street Cemetery, Triangle. Friends of the family may call Monday 4-8PM at Root Funeral Home, 23 N.
