Charles Karpiak Obituary

Karpiak, Charles L. Sr.

Charles L. Karpiak, Sr, 66, of Conklin, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Karpiak. Chuck is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathleen Karpiak; two sons and two daughters-in-law: Charles Jr. and Tiffany Karpiak, Michael and Melissa Karpiak; three granddaughters who were the lights of his eyes: Tasha Karpiak, Michaela Karpiak, Brandi Karpiak; sister: Paulette Karpiak; mother-in-law: Anne Perkins; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: "Brick" and "Bobbie" Staub and "Rusty" and Mary White; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Chuck heroically served in the United States Army during Vietnam and was wounded in action while trying to save the life of a fellow soldier, earning him the receipt of two Purple Hearts. Chuck also received the Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a quiet, humble man who never wanted any recognition for his bravery. Chuck was a member of the Conklin Presbyterian Church and loved to fish, camp, boat and most days you could find him mowing the acreage at his property in Conklin or following and cheering on the Mets. When his sons were younger "Pop" enjoyed coaching little league baseball and the church basketball team. "Grandpa" enjoyed all his granddaughter's dance recitals, swim meets, softball games, bowling league, little gym, cheerleading, numerous school events, and playing with his grandcats. He will be deeply missed by his family who cherished and loved every moment with him and even though he is with other loved ones in heaven his memory will live on here. The family will welcome friends and family for a "Celebration of Life" that will be held on Saturday, September, 14, 2013 from 2-5 pm at the Binghamton Elks Club, 1 Trim Street, Kirkwood with a military service and honors at 2pm. Burial will be at a National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Special thanks to our family and Tracy, Mike, Briana, and little Mike; Wayne; the "S&B" Club; caretakers; and all our friends and co-workers who have been there for us during this time. Also a special thanks to Jim, Noni, Greg and Joanna for your gift of music at Wilson Hospital and in Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Chuck's memory to Lourdes Hospice, 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, NY, 13850 or to The Conklin Presbyterian Church Youth Group, P.O. Box 151, Conklin, NY 13748. Condolences may be expressed online at www.savagefs.com.

Kathy & Family, Once again I read the messages left by family, friends, classmates and I just can't believe that Chuck isn't with us. I look at his picture and can't explain just how much in disbelief I am. Immediately I go back in time to little league. He and Jack, two lefties.....boy how I hated playing against them at the Castle. I remember Chuck at IBM or at an SV game.
I sincerely hope that you and the family are doing okay. God Bless ....

Kathy, Here we are seven years later and memories of Chuck are as fresh today as ever. Being little league, Jr league or high school baseball, his left handed pitching was awesome ! I never liked having to bat against Chuck. (not to mention he played for Conklin Center) I hope that you and your family are doing well at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I can still remember Chuck loading up the boat and vehicle with so much stuff for one of our numerous fishing trips to Black lake. We all had a great time and a lot of fun at the lake and Rosies cabins which were just a little better than sleeping outside.

September 12, 2013

Dear Kathy and family, Chuck was a great friend with a quick sense of humor (back up plan and "garage keys") Remember all the good times and know he is finally at peace. Love you all. Lyn
