Cashman, John A. (Jack)

Hillcrest: age 75, passed away on Thursday, March 10th, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Botting; son-in-law, Donald Link; and nephew, James O'Connell. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn Cashman of Hillcrest; children, Cathy and Blane Dopko of Chenango Bridge; Gail and Stephen Barlow of Hillcrest; Michael and Marianne Cashman of Port Dickinson; Michael Botting of Chenango Bridge; grandchildren, Jason and Andy Link; Ashley Dopko; John and Maggie Barlow; Shannon, Abbey and Courtney Cashman; Tate and Rich Botting; sister, Betty Anne Hackney of TX; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Mary O'Connell of Rochester, NY; several nieces, nephews and close friends. Jack served in the US Army and was a graduate of Ithaca College, Syracuse University and Cortland State. He moved to Binghamton in 1965 and was a physical education teacher and football and baseball coach for Chenango Valley and North High Schools. Jack retired as the Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics for the Binghamton City School District. He received the National Athletic Directors Award of Merit, the New York State Physical Education Director of the Year Award and is a member of the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame. He served his community as a member of the Hillcrest Community Association, Town of Fenton Planning Board, and the Chenango Valley School Board. He was especially proud of his time as the coach of the CV Oilers Girls' Softball team. The family would like to thank the staff of Lourdes Hospice and Father Lord. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Monday, March 14th, 2011 at 10:00 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1031 Chenango Street, Hillcrest. Burial will follow in Chenango Valley Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the James V. DeMarco & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson, NY on Sunday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to Binghamton City School District Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 272, Southview Station, Binghamton, NY 13903 or to Chenango Valley Student Loan, PO Box 1137, Binghamton, NY 13902.
