John Buchma Jr. Obituary
Buchma, John, Jr.

Vestal: John Buchma Jr., 84, joined his late wife of 49 years, Shirley, on Tuesday morning, October 1, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Parania Buchma; three sisters, Helen, Annie, and Kate and a brother, Paul. John is survived by three daughters, Bonnie (Kevin) Whiting of Apalachin, Cathy (Jay) Teinert of Bedford, TX, and Karen Buchma of Vestal; a son, John Joseph (Becky) Garnett-Buchma of Chester, England; six grandchildren, Tyler, Lillie and Connor Whiting, Julia and Samual Teinert, and Harry Garnett-Buchma; a great granddaughter, Dailee Gow; two brothers, Joseph and Andrew Buchma; a sister, Alice Arlauskas; his sister-in-law, Rose Guiles; many caring nieces, nephews and his numerous church family friends at St. John's. He was a proud member of St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, its choir and a past president and bartender of St. John's Social Club. He raised his children to love and appreciate his Ukrainian heritage. John was a retired employee of the I.B.M. Corporation, Owego after 36 years of service working most of his time on the space shuttle programs. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War serving on the USS Wisconsin. John enjoyed dancing, making any partner look like an Arthur Murray graduate. He was truly involved with his children and grandchildren by teaching them how to make snow forts, tobogganing, riding bikes and any other activity they got into. John and his wife, Shirley also were hosts for many get togethers at their home where shots of "yaz" were shared by all. A funeral service will be offered by Rev. Father Ivan Synevskyy on Monday at 10AM at St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1 St. John's Parkway, Johnson City. Rev. Synevskyy will conduct a prayer service Sunday at 5PM at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton where the family will receive friends Sunday 3-6PM. Contributions may be made in John's memory to his church.
