Ward, Lucile May Phelps
Lexington, SC: Lucile May Phelps Ward left us peacefully in her sleep on February 19, 2013. Born in Philadephia, PA on May 4, 1918, she was the daughter of Louis LaSalle and Florence Arnzen Phelps of Deposit, NY. She was predeceased in 1991 by her "only great love," her husband Vincent S. Ward, after 51 years of marriage. She is survived by her brother, Donald of Bainbridge, NY; her son, Vincent Phelps Ward of Columbia, SC; her granddaughter, Robin Anne Ward of Los Angeles, CA; and her grandson, Branden Vincent Ward of Sumter, SC. She was also quite fond of two nephews, Alan Phelps of Oswego, NY and Dana Phelps of Bainbridge, NY. "Cile" and "Vin" lived most of their married life in Chenango Bridge, NY. They took their vacations on the back of their "Harley Hog" to New England, Nova Scotia, and Florida for many years, and for even longer loved their membership in the Square Deal Riders Motorcycle Club of Binghamton, NY. They enjoyed many summer weekends at the horse races at Finger Lakes near Ithaca, NY. After Vin died Cile carried on alone in their familiar home, becoming the little old lady who drove all the other little old ladies around to lunch. She visited frequently with her brother and nephew Dana in Bainbridge. In 2005, when she could no longer drive, she left her beloved Chenango Bridge and moved to Columbia, SC to be near her son and his wife Rhea, and her grandson Branden. Lucile's life was an ongoing trial for her, yet she made the best of it, courageous, feisty, and determined through the end. The last people to witness that were the staff of Oakleaf Village in Lexington, SC, where she had lived since March 2012. Their caring and respect for her were remarkable, and are deeply appreciated by those who witnessed it. At the end, Heartstrings Hospice was providing especially appropriate guidance and comfort to her and her family. Mom, we hope and believe that Dad was waiting for you when you crossed. Expressions of sympathy for the Ward family may be left at www.southcarolinacremation.com.
