Loewenstein, Lucy

Endwell, NY: Dr. Lucy Riesman Loewenstein, age 72, of Endwell, NY passed away on November 22, 2013, at her home. She had been married to Dr. Fritz Loewenstein, who predeceased her in October 2012. She was born on January 14, 1941 to parents David Riesman, a well-known social scientist and author, and Evelyn Thompson Riesman, also an author. She is survived by a sister, Jennie Riesman of Munich, Germany; a brother Michael Riesman of New York, NY; a niece Amanda Riesman of Brooklyn, NY; a nephew Ben Riesman of Philadelphia, PA; and serveral cousins. Lucy was a member of the University Women's Club, Lyceum, Harmony Club, B.C. Peace Action (Nuclear Weapons Reduction), Downtown Singers, played cello in the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra and various chamber music groups, and attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton. Her empathy for the underdog and sensitivity to people in need were driving forces, as was her love of music and literature. She was a gifted cellist and singer, and a regular ensemble performer & frequent soloist with many music groups. Her generous support both financial and moral of the major cultural, social, political and educational institutions in town as well as Alzheimer's research and Diabetes research were paramount in her life. At Lucy's request there will be no funeral services.
