formerly of Johnson City: Matthew Bednar, 55, of Boynton Beach FL, formerly of Johnson City, passed away on October 27, 2013. Matt is predeceased by his father, Peter M. Bednar; His paternal grandparents: Mary & Peter Bednar and his Maternal grandparents, John & Mary Laskowski. Matt is survived by his mother: Jane M Bednar, JC. A companion: Maida Jasper, FL; a brother: Colonel Mark Bednar (USAF) and his wife, Lisa Bednar, Hawaii; a sister: Marie Bednar and a brother Michael Bednar, both of Virginia Beach. A nephew: Christopher Bednar and two nieces, Caroline & Mary Bednar, all of Hawaii. Upon graduating from high school, Matt was elected to the JC School Board of Education. At the time, he was the youngest school board member in the entire state of NY. Matt's. Interest in politics started at an early age and continued throughout his life. Matt worked in the restaurant industry for several years, in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and most recently in Florida. Many of his former co-workers have called him a mentor that taught them valuable lessons in the workplace. He was an avid golfer, bowler, cigar Afficionado and loved all sports. Matt was extremely gregarious and loyal. If you met Matt, within five minutes you were a friend forever. He was loved by all and was devoted to his family. Matt had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephew. Matt was truly a patriot, and believed in bringing people together. Matt's own words really say it all. He recently wrote, "I am thankful for the men and women, past and present, who have provided us with freedom, sometimes with their lives. We must remember that we are not an entitled nation, but one that was created by sacrifice. Please remember in your prayers tonight those who have given. And while pondering our country's future, let's start communication with each other with a "hi", a smile or a positive gesture. Drop the impersonal texting and try voice to voice witb eye contact, turn off the reality show and say a prayer, not because you need something. Finally, have a great night's sleep in This still free country. With love and patriotism, Matt." A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Holy Trinity, 346 Prospect St. Binghamton, NY, at 9:30AM on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM.
