Angelo Sr., Raymond W.

Raymond William Angelo, Sr. of Johnson City, New York, passed away on November 18, 2013 at his home. Ray was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY, the son of Joachim (originally Giachinno, later John) Angelo and Helen Kolb Angelo. He grew up in Brooklyn surrounded by a large Sicilian family. He served in Italy during WWII. Following the war, he attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute on the GI Bill. He received his Masters in Chemistry in 1960. In 1955 he married Marion Stowe and they enjoyed 58 very happy years together. He always said that was the smartest thing he ever did. In 1962 they moved to Endwell, NY, and Ray began 28 years with IBM in Endicott, NY. He is the holder of several patents. Ray retired in 1990. The family had taken many trips in the United States and Canada. After retirement, Ray and Marion began touring the world. They went to England, Scotland, Northern Italy, Sicily, China, and the USSR (twice). In 2005, to celebrate their 50th anniversary, their children sent them on a tour of Alaska. Ray was also very active in Lyceum and enjoyed many classes there. He was a leader of the Science Discussion Group for many years. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton for 51 years. He was especially interested in science, history, and economics. Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Marion, his daughter Marilyn (Endwell, NY), his daughter Nancy and her husband Michael Christin (Batesville, IN), his son Raymond Jr. and his wife Jill Roark (Silver Spring, MD), his granddaughter Kendra Christin and her fiancé Kelly Gunthorpe (Bar Harbor, ME), his grandson Gregory Christin and his wife Kasi (Batesville, IN), his pride-and-joy, great grandson Grant Michael Christin (Batesville, IN), his brother Kenneth (Cooperstown, NY), four nieces, a nephew, and many cousins. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton, 183 Riverside Drive, Binghamton on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to the or Lyceum, Graduate School of Education, Binghamton University, P.O. Box 6000. Binghamton, NY 13901-6000 with a note that is a memorial gift for Raymond Angelo.
