Balan, Catherine (Meko)

Catherine (Meko) Balan, 92, died peacefully at Wilson Hospital on Friday, March 21, 2014. She was predeceased by her parents Michael and Pauline Meko, her husband Joseph and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, Theresa (Robert) Wheeler, Springfield, MO; Joanne (Sidney) Terry, Mequon, WI; and Philip (Karen) Balan, Endicott. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren, David Polosky, Kathleen Erickson (Thomas Birtch), Daniel (Christy) Polosky, Christina Polosky, Anne (Stephen) Schowalter, Laura (Brian) Hackbarth, Catherine Terry, Alan Shuma, Lindsey Shuma, Daniel Shuma, and David Wheeler; two sisters Julia Tasco and Helen Sager, and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces, most notably the Kumpon Family who held a special place in her heart. She was a lifelong member of St Cyril's parish and a member of the Rosary Society. She lived in her home in the First Ward of Binghamton for over sixty years, working at various factories including Ozalid, Ansco and GAF. For the last three years, she has been living at the United Methodist Homes' Elizabeth Church and Hilltop Campuses, enjoying the company of her fellow residents and the scenic views from her room. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of United Methodist Homes for the care and attention they provided to make her final years memorable, as well as the kindness provided by the staff of NT4 of Wilson Hospital who helped to ease her pain in her final days. Catherine will be laid to rest on Thursday, March 27th, ninety three years to the day that she entered our world. Calling hours will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. at the Sedlock Funeral Home, 161 Clinton St, Binghamton, NY. Burial will be at the Slovak Catholic Cemetery, Riverside Dr, Binghamton, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Catherine's name be made to the Sun Unit at United Methodist Homes Hilltop Campus.
