Szymanak, David Walter

David Walter Szymanak, 41, left the kind and gentle care of the staff of Troy Community Hospital on April 15, 2014 with his loving family at his side. He was the bravest, most courageous and awe inspiring person that we ever knew. He was smart, witty, humble, God-fearing, loyal, outspoken, proud, beautiful and ultimately stronger than Superman. David was born on November 7, 1972, in Johnson City, NY to the late Walter Frank Szymanak and Donna Joan Szymanak. He is predeceased by his sister, Judy Barrows. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Paige Lynn Szymanak; his devoted and protective sisters, Nanette (Paul) Hlebica and Lisa Poirier; his nieces and nephews, Andrea and Eddie Hlebica, Matthew (Mekala), Christian, Brett and Ryan Poirier, and Jennifer, Andy and Daniel Hine; his maternal uncle, Charles Carpenter; his paternal aunt, Sophie Burns; and several cousins. David was a graduate of Johnson City Senior High School and Broome Community College. He was a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed WWE wrestling since he was a young boy. After his spinal cord injury, he was privileged to have had a hospital visit from Olympic Gold Medalist and WWE wrestler Kurt Angle. He took great pleasure in traveling to places such as California, Mexico, Florida, NYC, Atlanta and London, England. He passed peacefully, with serenity and grace, and is once again walking, unencumbered by machines. Free in body and spirit. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by those who had the privilege to know and love him. Family and friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014, at St. James Church, 155 Main St., Johnson City, NY. A Funeral Mass will follow the calling hour at the church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Contributions in David's name may be made to Troy Community Hospital Auxiliary, 275 Guthrie Dr., Troy, PA 16947. David's family cannot adequately express their gratefulness to the staff (and most notably, Dr. Vance Good) for the excellent care they afforded David, and for all of their kindness and support for the many years David resided at their facility. Arrangements have been entrusted to J.F. Rice Funeral Home, Inc., Johnson City.
