Painter, Gladys Farmer

Charlottesville, VA: Gladys Farmer Painter, 87, of Charlottesville, VA, died on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Born on July 16, 1926, in Dublin, VA, she was the daughter of Peyton Estel and Mary Gertrude Swecker Farmer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Painter of Woodstock, VA; her daughter, Roberta Painter of Woodstock, VA; and her brother, Beverly "Buck" Farmer of Charlottesville. After completing her primary education in Pulaski County, VA, Gladys attended and graduated from Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA with a degree in Home Economics. She completed her student teaching in Dayton, VA and later became a Home Demonstration Agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service and was assigned to Shenandoah County, VA. There she met and married her husband, Bob, and raised their four children. She was very active in the Woodstock United Methodist Church and in the community. In 1994, she moved to Charlottesville to be near her daughters, transferring her membership to Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Gladys is survived by her children, Mike Painter and wife, Sonia, of Binghamton, NY, Patty Mainzer and husband, Pete, of Charlottesville, Bill Painter and wife, Ellen, of McGaheysville, VA, and Susan Painter of Charlottesville; grandsons, Bobby Painter of Austin, TX, and his mother, Jane Collins of Madison, WI, Chris Painter of Newport News, VA, and William Painter of Binghamton, NY; brother, Larry Farmer and wife, Mozelle, of Leesburg, VA; sister-in-law, Mary Farmer of Charlottesville; nieces, Penny Riley of Suffield, CT and Pam Farmer of Charlottesville. The family would like to express appreciation to the following people for the special love and care they gave to Mom: Leslie Davis, Margaret Ballard, Rev. Chris Fuss, Dr. Carolyn Dalldorf and staff and the staff of RoseWood Village Assisted Living. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Gladys will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Rio Road, Charlottesville. Rev. Scott Davis and Rev. Chris Fuss will officiate. A reception will follow immediately at the church. Interment will be in Woodstock, VA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901 designated for Outreach & Missions projects or to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, P.O. Box 937, Verona, VA 24482-0937. Please designate Food Bank donations for the Greer Elementary School Backpack Program, Thomas Jefferson District. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
