Gunther, Ruth (Barnard)

Berkshire: Ruth Gunther, 91, of Berkshire, passed away suddenly, following a brief illness, on July 25, 2014. Ruth was the daughter of the late Sanford and Iva Mae (Fredenburgh) Barnard. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Francis H. Gunther; siblings, Etta Mae Norman, Polly Fletcher, Robert, William and Horace Barnard; children, Carol (Gunther) McIntyre and Jack Gunther; grandchildren, Dorene Hayes, Steven Gunther; and a great-grandson, Andrew Gunther. Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Karen (Kuhlman) Gunther; sisters, Alice (Herbert) Sines, Marian Gladyz and Mary (Richard) Poltz; grandchildren, Jack (Cheryl) Gunther, Shawn (Heather) Gunther, Todd (Cassandra) Gunther, Sharon Gunther (Scott) Ludwig, Sarah Gunther, Richard Hayes and Jackie Hayes; 21 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her special friends, Margret Hinchcliff, Herb and Janet Poreda and George and Beverly Wakeman. True to being a July 4th baby, she was a firecracker! She was also quick witted and always ready to dance the polka in her younger years. Family and friends were her life…daily check-in calls and lending a hand were part of her routine. A compassionate and caring lady, she also enjoyed time spent with her friends, and playing cards and "Zonk" with her sons and grandkids. She shared her love of gardening with her husband and managed to find a spot in almost every window of her home for a plant! Her family will receive their friends on Saturday, August 2nd, at McPherson Funeral Home in Newark Valley from 10-11:45 a.m. A Memorial Service will follow there at 12 noon. The family respectfully wishes, in lieu of flowers, friends consider donating to the Owego Zion Lutheran School Scholarship, where her great-grandchildren attend, or the Weltonville Volunteer Fire Company. Memories of Ruth and condolences may be written in her guest book at macphersonfh.com.
