Lloyd James Ayers (Pop), of Greene, passed away Sunday, November 7, at the New York State Veterans home in Oxford, NY with family at his side. He is predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Mae Roland Ayers. He was 74. He is survived by their son, Michael Ayers, Binghamton; daughter-in-law, Wanda Ayers, Binghamton; son, David and Bonnie Ayers, Greene; daughter, Kathleen and Danny Reid, Mt. Olive, AL; and son, Stephen and Tammy Ayers, Radcliff, KY; his sister, Shirley and Robert Mulder, Roanoke; a sister, Joyce and James Sink, Roanoke; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Lloyd was born in Franklin County, VA to Lenard and Nannie (Fielder) Ayers September 1, 1936. Coming from a three generation military family, Lloyd also joined the Army at 17 years old. He met his wife at Fort Lewis, WA where they married and raised four children while being stationed at multiple bases around the world. Lloyd served one tour of duty in Korea and two tours in Vietnam before retiring in 1976 after over 20 years. As their children were growing, Lloyd and his wife were active in scouting. They also raised and showed their German Shepherds. An avid pet lover, Pop had many special dogs and cats over the years. A graveside service will be on Tuesday, November 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Sylvan Lawn Cemetery in Greene.
